Maldives President Approves Comprehensive Prison Reforms to Enhance Rehabilitation and Employment

In a significant move towards improving the correctional system, President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has approved a comprehensive reform plan aimed at expanding work opportunities for inmates both within and outside prison facilities. The newly approved framework provides a structured pathway for inmates to gain employment and participate in community service initiatives. Inmates who successfully complete rehabilitation programs, in line with guidelines set by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and the Maldives Correctional Service, will be eligible for sentence reductions and pardons.

Cabinet Meeting and Key Reforms

The decision to implement these reforms was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by President Muizzu on Sunday. The meeting included a detailed presentation by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, outlining a strategic roadmap for modernizing the correctional system.

Following deliberations and with the cabinet's advice, President Muizzu authorized several key measures, including:
